Mega Trend - Individualisation
Mega-TrendIndividualisation
Globalisation, digital connection and the growth of prosperity have multiplied the options for self-development over the last couple of decades. So much is possible now and all at the same time. The price? Solidarity and collective movements such as the workers’ movement are no longer fashionable; everyone fights for themselves alone. People increasingly find themselves in competition with others. Self-fulfilment is one thing, while self-optimisation for the system is the other side of the coin. “Yes, we’re all individuals!”, shouts the crowd in a scene from Monty Python’s “The Life of Brian”. This is a wonderfully poignant paradox that cannot simply be ignored. When searching for more individuality and originality, everyone wants to distinguish themselves from others somehow. People create their own brand identity in order to stand out from the crowd. To become unique, we often have to individualise totally normal products and services. From self-designed clothes, to media consumption, to a chosen lifestyle – many people look for distinction in niches. Companies have spotted this and are meeting the needs, wishes and preferences of consumers full on. Either customised or needs-based, individualisation is becoming personalisation as customers want to be independent and flexible, as well as individual. A welcome aspect of all this is the fact that variety and diversity is more accepted, also in terms of sexual orientation and gender identities.
These are the macro-trends of the Individualisation:
- Gravitational Content
- Lifestyle Diversity
- Personal Brand
- Personal Design
- Self-Tracking
- Sexuality and Gender Identities
How sociological megatrends like individualisation, commercialisation and focus on health and well being will impact the service industry over the coming decade.
Megatrends are fundamental external driving forces that impact every level of society, where they have and will continue to shape our future for decades to come. Of the nine megatrends every FM provider should know, here are the three social megatrends which will impact the global FM and services industry towards 2020.
1. Individualisation
We experience it everyday, at the workplace, on the street and on social media – a central part of modern life has become to distinguish oneself from others. People and organisations expect tailored products, services and solutions and in this way, individualism has made branding one of the key aspects of modern sales and marketing.
Individualisation will impact organizations and social relations, especially in low- and middle-income countries. First, individualisation can be seen in the gradual dissolution of traditional market segments. Second, companies will experience increasing employee turnover. Third, individualisation will also mark itself by the fact that there will be an increasing demand for individual attention in both the private and corporate sphere.
Consequences for the FM and services industry
A number of consequences come with the increased focus on individualism, the most important are:
- Individualised services: Companies expect their FM and services industry providers to supply individualized services that maximize their value proposition. The development of computer-assisted facility management will allow companies to offer increasingly individualized offerings for facility customers. The mantra that will drive this development will be: How can individualized FM and services industry offerings improve workplace productivity?
- Mentoring & training programs: Employees will increasingly expect their employers to help them achieve their professional and private goals. If companies are unwilling or unable to provide the appropriate mentoring or training programs, employees will switch to the companies that will, which could result in higher employee turnover.
